Whether or not you have ever personally experienced the excitement and fulfillment associated with community service, it is never too late to take it up a notch. Contemporary community service organizations offer to interested individuals the opportunity to service a community through their actions. Ranging from a simple project like a daycare service for young women professionals and their infants, to a more complex one like building the local school facilities of a village in Eastern Africa, community services are part of a global effort to assist another group of people by offering experts advice and the required set of skills. But community service, apart from it being an alternative sentencing...

Infrastructure and Prosperity
In the past, if you mentioned the word "infrastructure", the verbal reflex would be: "physical". Infrastructure was roads, telephone lines, ports, airports and other very tangible country spanning things. Many things were added to this category as time went by, but they all preserved the tangibility requirements - even electricity and means of communication were measured by their physical manifestations: lines, poles, distances.Today, we distinguish three additional categories of infrastructure which were unbeknownst to our forefathers:Social infrastructure - laws, social institutions and agencies, social stratification, demographic elements and other social structures, formal and informal. It is...
Disabled In Debt
Disabled people have lower incomes but often have extra costs associated with their impairment. This situation drives two out of five disabled people to seek loans and other forms of credit to meet the demands of higher living costs on a below-average income. The result is that many people are being driven into 'problem debts', which are often loans they are left unable to repay. The Leonard Cheshire disability charity is calling on the UK Government and the credit industry to help alleviate the burden of this debt. A survey by the charity found that nine out of 10 of people found themselves running out of money on a regular basis. It also found that more than half did not earn enough to meet their...

Just What Is A Learning Disability?
A learning disability is defined as a permanent problem that affects a person with average to above average intelligence, in the way that he/she receives, stores, and processes information. There are many wrong ideas out there about learning disabilities. For example:1) A learning disability will go away in time. Unfortunately, this is not true. The good news is, you can learn ways to get around the problem. For example, kids who have trouble taking notes in class, like Michele did, can record the class on audiotape. Other students can make copies of the notes they have taken for them. The teacher can make copies of the notes they are lecturing from. Or, when the notes are...
Walk-In Bathtubs for Convenience and Comfort...
You may have noticed that some old people can have a hard time going over a regular bathtub. You may also notice that it is very impractical for disabled persons to climb over bathtubs. And, you know that they might need help in doing it. What if they want or is forced to live alone and don't want any assistance from other people? Who will assist them to get inside the bathtub? Walk-in bathtubs are probably the best solution for this kind of problem. As what the name walk-in bathtub says, you don't need to climb over its sides just to get inside the tub. All you need to do is simply open a door and walk inside. You may now wonder how you can fill it with water if it has a door on its side. The doors...

Dark circles or bags under the eyes making the child look permanently tired. In Chinese medicine this area of the face is linked to the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are one of the main organs of the body involved in stress reactions, and exposure to allergens certainly produces stress in the body. Sometimes there is also a crease seen under the eyelids...
Irritable Bowel Syndrome May Be Due To Missed...
Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common gastrointestinal diagnosis yet it is not really a disease nor does it have confirmatory diagnostic tests. Rather, it is diagnosed based on a constellation of symptoms and the absence of other diagnoses. Common symptoms attributed to IBS are abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, bloating and excess gas. Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is a common but frequently missed gastrointestinal diagnosis. Ingestion of gluten containing foods in affected individuals commonly causes symptoms attributed to IBS that are relieved with gluten-free diet in at least 10-20% of people misdiagnosed with IBS. Other food intolerances are also a likely a cause of IBS symptoms...
The Disabled and Affiliate Marketing
When I moved close to Fargo, ND in 2003 I needed a way to earn a living. I learned about affiliate marketing from my landlord and friend. I have multiple sclerosis which isn't getting any better. I'd been married to a woman from North Dakota for 9 years and we had a son. When we divorced she moved back home and my son went with her. It didn't really matter to me where I lived because I had quit my cell phone sales job at the end of 2002 and my health was getting worse. I had very few ties left with the Minneapolis area. All of my friends had gotten married or moved away and had lives of their own. I didn't want my son growing up without me so I moved to ND in September of 2003. Now, I'm 20 minutes...

Some people like to debate whether or not golf is a "real" sport. I think it's safe to say that most of us do consider it a sport. It may not be as rigorous as football or as demanding as running, but it does require physical skills and it involves competition. Sounds like a sport to me.As with any sport, practice is of the utmost importance. Practice right to play right. We've all heard the cliches. Practice makes perfect. Have you found that despite all the time spend practicing your golf swing, you just can't seem to improve much? Do you have nearly perfect form but you feel like your game's become stagnant? What could be lacking when you practice all the time? Maybe what you're missing out on is...
Financial Help
Financial help is a means of providing assistance to groups or individuals who are currently unable to meet their financial needs on their own. Most financial help systems cater to specific target groups, such as low-income families and individuals, persons with disabilities or diseases, and students, while some are more general in nature.Forms of financial helpFinancial help takes many forms. Some are simple loans to be paid back after a requisite amount of time. Others are outright grants awarded to groups or individuals. Tax credits, medical benefits, and subsidized childcare services are also forms of financial help. In the United States, the government gives financial help in the form of...
Don't have a separate room you can designate as a home office? You can create a comfortable and functional computer work station in remarkably little space. A corner of your living room or bedroom, even a spare closet, can provide plenty of room.First measure out the amount of space you can allocate for your work station. Then, start to plan. You need a surface for your computer monitor or laptop, and room underneath for your hard drive. If you have a printer and/or a scanner, this also needs a work surface, ideally with storage space underneath for printer paper and other supplies. You may also want space for an additional external backup hard drive. Measure all your equipment and furnishings and...
Turn Your Employees Into Customer Service Dynamos
Businesses have been trying for decades to import good service practices and graft them into their own work settings. They use training programs or other means to try and "regimentalize" key service behaviors-an outside-in approach that seldom makes things any better, and often only makes things worse. Truly customer-focused businesses deliver outstanding service from the inside out. The key is to get employees coming up with their own ideas for delighting customers, and then letting positive feedback from happy customers motivate the workers to continue implementing more of their own innovative service strategies. This is the Flashpoint Effect, where employee motivation and customer satisfaction...
Acquired Color Vision Deficiency
Oliver Sacks, in the Case of the Colorblind Painter, describes how an artist, who was famous for his brilliantly-colored abstract canvasses, suddenly and irreversibly loses all color perception as the result of a car accident. This tragic case depicted by Sacks is one example of an acquired color vision deficiency. What were once vibrant works of art now appeared to him grayish or black and white. It was a devastating blow for a lifelong painter whose art and life were now without meaning. Not all cases of this affliction, however, are as sudden, complete or permanent: onset can be slow and appreciation of colors can change gradually over time depending on the particular eye disease.However...
Imagine a tongue where the upper surface of the tongue turns black or brown in color and in some cases the papillae elongate (get longer). Doctors consider this to be an unsightly condition but not harmful. They call it black tongue. It can be extremely distressing and put a severe cramp on your social life. Many people with tongue problems become so self-conscious that they dont want to open their mouths in public and often begin restricting their social activities.Another potential tongue problem is hairy tongue. This involves a lengthening of the tongue papillae, causing the tongue to appear hairy or furry. Again, this is not considered to be a harmful disorder, but does of course cause worry.If...

In our modern society disability should no longer be a barrier to learning, to having access to goods, facilities and services, to buying or renting land or property, or to employment. New, technologically enhanced disability products are available for those with physical challenges, making it easier for them to perform activities within the normal range of a person. These products together with an adequately adapted environment can facilitate both passive and active integration into society. Included in the definition of disability is the difficulty to carry out activities considered simple basic ones for a regular human being, because of impairment. No matter the type of disability (mobility...

Independent living with assisted living technology
Assisted living technology has a great influence on the lives of those who suffer from certain disabilities. Persons with special medical conditions caused by diseases, accidents or genetics and even the elderly can now benefit from the use of independent...

Do Diversity Policies Matter?
A recent survey conducted by the National Society of Hispanic Professionals (NSHP) asked 268 Hispanics their opinion on diversity policies in the workplace. A whopping 72 percent of those surveyed felt that diversity policies were more words than actions or did not make a difference, while only 27 percent felt that such polices were necessary in the workplace and benefited Hispanics. While it is probably true that most Hispanics surveyed believe in the ideals of diversity, it is apparent from the survey that a large majority of respondents do not feel that its purposes have been accomplished to their satisfaction. On the other hand, human resources executives at many of the largest corporations in...

How do you create your dreams in your life?
How do you create a dream? What are your dreams? Spend a few minutes, right now, writing them down. Of course, dont edit your thoughts, just ask what are my dreams? And start writing down the thoughts that come immediately to you. Make a list. Im a dreamer. I got it from my Dad. Several years ago I looked at my life and wondered how did I get here? It felt like it had all just happened and I had watched and participated but I hadnt necessarily been in the drivers seat. I took some time to figure out what type of career I wanted. At the time I was a mid-level manager in a non-profit organization serving people with disabilities. It was work I had been doing since I was 14 years old. I...

All strands of the discrimination legislation contain a prohibition on "victimisation", preventing an employer from subjecting an employee to any detriment by reason of the fact that the employee has made an allegation or claim of unlawful discrimination. Without such protection from reprisals, the discrimination legislation would be significantly weakened. In the case of St Helens Borough Council v Derbyshire, the House of Lords had to determine whether, by exerting pressure on employees to settle an equal pay claim, the Council had committed an act of victimisation. The Facts The case concerned 510 school dinner ladies, who argued that they were entitled to the same rate of pay as road sweepers...
